An Ivy League perspective on the subject of historical materialism. Yale University offers this open course, a chance to audit their SOCY 151: Foundations of Modern Social Theory. Lecture 10 is titled Marx’s Theory of Historical Materialism and the subject is continued in Lecture 11. However, Lesson 12 – Marx’s Theory of History really explains the subject as we address it here. This link opens to Lecture 12. About halfway through Professor Iván Szelényi comments that Marx was in error in thinking that his theory would also apply to the end of the capitalist system. I respectfully disagree with the professor on this point. The RoR satisfies the requisites of Marx’s theory. A rift is developing between the means of production and the relations of production, as Marx hypothesized. I believe the concept of private ownership is about to evolve further, but exactly how depends on how we react to the changes.
